Ancient Roman Votive Mirror // 2nd-4th Century AD
Product Description
Ancient Rome, c. 2nd-4th century AD. A nice Roman lead votive mirror. Mold-formed, with an annular mirror face and integral handle. The handle is adorned with zigzags and the front mirror face is surrounded by pairs of S-shaped lines with a plant leaf at the top. The openwork central ring once held a glass or polished silver mirror to see one's reflection. The original reflective inlay lost to history (although a small mirror removed from a makeup compact and set behind the ring would give the effect!) Repaired at the top of the handle, otherwise intact, with nice dark patina. L: 3.5 inches. Provenance: Ex private Farmer family collection, Maryland, USA, acquired before 2010.
