Roman large bronze head applique of Selinus, 2nd–3rd century AD. A large and magnificent Roman bronze appliqué depicting the face of Selinus, the Roman god of the wild, forests and fields, and loyal follower of the god Dionysus. 3-Dimensional in form, with incredible detail! The god is depicted with mouth open showing teeth, thick, wavy beard, well-defined eyes and nose, and wearing an ivy-leaf laurel. Beautiful olive-green patina. Measures 2 1/4” (58mm) in diameter! Ex B. McDowell estate, WI, purchased at Sotheby’s, 1965.
