We are offering a RARE High Denomination 1899 $ 1 Black Eagle Silver Certificate MULE NOTE. The note is also an ERROR note as the letter “A” in the serial number is not lined up with the rest of the other numbers. The tumbler did not rotate all the way. The note is graded by PCGS in 63 PPQ (Premium Paper Quality).

This note is also a very rare MULE note and that adds to the value and collectability. A mule note is a note that has a micro (smaller in size) plate number on one side, and a macro (larger in size) plate number on the other. Micro numbers measure 0.6mm and macro numbers measure 1mm high.

This occurred because the BEP had a standard economic policy of using up obsolete plates rather than scrapping them. Whenever micro faces are paired with macro backs, or macro faces are paired with micro backs, a mule is produced. During the transition to all macro plates, both micro and macro plates were in use. Usually these different plates were side-by-side on the same press.

This Black Egle is from the large size currency series . This note has the date of 1899 to “the right side of the note”. If you look to the right side of the blue seal, you will see that the date is on the side of the note. That is why this note is called “Date Right”.

The signature combination of Elliott and White in a MULE note is one of the harder combinations to find. It also features the pictures of presidents Lincoln and Grant.

All this adds up to a highly collectable note.

It states on the back:

“THIS CERTIFICATE IS RECEIVABLE FOR CUSTOMS TAXES AND ALL PUBLIC DUES, AND WHEN SO RECEIVED MAY BE REISSUED”
