Product Description

Being offered today is a VERY RARE ERROR high grade example of an Offset Printing Error on a 1977 $ 10 Federal Reserve note from the Cleveland (D) Federal Reserve. This note is graded by PMG (Paper Money Guarantee) in 64 Choice Uncirculated - Exceptional Paper Quality (EPQ).

What does Offset Printing Error mean? In this case, the error involves a mirror image of the reverse design that was printed on the front of the note. What makes this super rare is that the reverse was printed BACKWARDS. Another great thing to consider here is that the back plate number of 157 matches the same plate number, which is on the front of the note, but it’s backwards. So, you know this error occurred at the same time they were printing the reverse side of the note.

With a sheet of paper placed between the printing plate (with the ink) and the impression cylinder. The ink from the printing plate is not supposed to touch the impression cylinder, but it can if they come in contact with each other with no paper between the two of them.

When this happens, the impression cylinder ends up with ink intended for the banknotes. The next time that paper touches the impression cylinder, the wayward ink can transfer to the notes. It shows up as an inverse (mirror) image on the wrong side of the note.

You can see that there are inverse elements of the design from the front of the note. It has “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” ON THE TOP and the words “TEN DOLLARS” at the bottom. Basically, it has everything from the reverse printed on the back exactly, just backwards!!

The design typically associated with the back of the note was printed first. Then the additional ink (with the inverse design of the front) was added, inadvertently, during a later printing. This is called "Offset Printing of Back to Front.
